Many succulents are from dry, arid regions and, as such, require sunlight to maintain a nice shape, colour and form, particularly succulents with lighter foliage. The red edge is achieved with greater exposure to sunlight.
The succulents shown here thrive outdoors. The best foliage colours, often a stunning feature, are achieved with lots of sun. In summer on very hot days it is important to provide some protection from direct afternoon sunlight. At all other times of the year they will love full sun.
Efforts can be made to keep these plants indoors in very sunny positions but colours may dull, leaves may flatten, elongate and stretch looking for light (this is known as etiolation) and the plant may fail to thrive. They can be brought in for short periods.
